Copal resin tears, or
Bursera fagaroides, is a dense, lustrous resin
- the most desirable of which comes from Mexico. This resin is derived
from a certain species of Hymenia. It lacks taste and smell and it is almost
colorless as well. It may display a light yellow or yellowish-brown color. One
of its primary uses is as a valuable varnish when dissolved in alcohol or
turpentine spirits. In its gum form, it is as hard as amber.
Natural resin-based
incenses made from copal resin tears give off a hypnotic and greatly pleasing
aroma when burned. In fact, large quantities of copal resin tears were regularly
burned at the tops of Aztec and Mayan pyramids. The preferred method to release
the excellent aroma is to crush the resin tears and place them on hot-burning
charcoal tablets. In no time, your room will be filled with the potently
pleasing herbal fragrance. The scent can be characterized as earthy, woody and
a bit spicy.
