More commonly known as European Valerian, Common Valerian, Valeriana and/or Allheal, Valerian Root is formally called Valeriana officinalis. Native to central Asia and northern Europe, valerian is classified as a perennial and grows to four feet in height. It produces pink-colored flowers and leaves shapes like pins. Roots are harvested for herbal healing purposes and must be dried at temperatures of less than 105 degrees Fahrenheit. It presents a spicy/sweet/bitter taste when brewed into a tea, Many people find it to display an unpleasant odor however.

Valerian roots are comprised of acetic acid, beta-iodine, ascorbic acid, caffeic acid, calcium, quercetin, manganese, magnesium and of course valeric acid. Besides funny-smelling teas, you can use valerian roots in tinctures and find it in extract and capsule form as well.

Since the time of Hippocrates (460 - 377 BCE), the herbal uses for valerian root are as follows:

• Relief from insomnia;
• Easing nervousness and restlessness;
• Relaxing menstrual cramps and stomach aches;

Long-term usage of valerian root can lead to dependency. So, you will want to gradually stop using it. Reduce your usage to none over a week or so. Do not use in conjunction with other tranquilizing agents.
