Product Description

Scientific name: Ginkgo biloba

Origin: China

History

Ginkgo trees are an ancient species native to China, without any known living relatives. The tree has been widely cultivated in Southeast Asia for thousands of years as a source of medicine and food. Ginkgo trees are long-lived and tenacious individuals that can live and grow for upwards of 2,500 years. Six of these trees were among the only living things to survive within a mile of the atomic blast at Hiroshima.

They can be recognized by their distinctive leaves that have an unusual spreading spade shape, unlike any other tree, and turn a brilliant yellow in the fall. In the United States male trees are most commonly planted, as female trees produce unpleasant-smelling fruits. These same fruits are prized as a food in many parts of Asia, where they use the nut within the fruit in many dishes, such as congees.

Ginkgo biloba powder has historical uses in Chinese medicine, where it was widely used to treat complaints of the lungs and heart, and was also considered an aphrodisiac. Currently, it is widely studied due to the tree’s other potential health benefits. Extracts from its leaves contain several powerful chemicals that can affect the human body.

Health Benefits

Modern scientists have extensively studied the effects of ginkgo biloba, with contradicting results. Most studies have found that consuming this herb may improve memory and concentration. These benefits have been found to peak about two and a half hours after ingestion.

Scientific research has also demonstrated that ginkgo biloba powder has several potential benefits related to the cardiovascular system, such as:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Protect against problems related to blood clots
  • Protects cells from damage from free radicals
  • Improves blood flow to tissues and organs

These health benefits have been established in clinical trials, however, individuals should be careful about taking the appropriate dose. It is possible to take too much of this herb, with potentially negative health effects. It may be wise to discuss the use of ginkgo biloba powder with your doctor, particularly if you are considering its use in tandem with other medications to treat potentially serious health conditions.

Precautions

The use of ginkgo biloba powder by people with blood circulation disorders is not recommended. Monoamine oxidase is inhibited by this herb, so the use of this plant is not compatible with some types of antidepressants. People who are susceptible to allergies should be cautious in their use of ginkgo biloba powder, as this tree can be highly allergenic.  Due to the genuine power of the herb, its use is not recommended in pregnant women as it may increase bleeding.

Overview

Ginkgo biloba powder is a powerful herb that has been well-studied by modern science and has been found to have powerful effects. The herb can be used as a memory and concentration aide, and has been shown to improve blood flow and protect against certain significant cardiovascular conditions. Due to the strength and efficacy of this herb, individuals should be certain that it is safe for them to take before using it medicinally.
